Chapter Twelve

How do you look for someone without drawing attention to yourself? I found myself asking—and trying to answer—as we searched for Ruth-Ann. We took turns covering one another as we called her name and looked behind bushes, under the bleachers of the football field, and even around the storage shed that Patrick had wanted to hide in. Ruth-Ann wasn’t anywhere to be found. Honestly, no one was anywhere to be found. Most sensible survivors had gone into hiding or made strongholds against their enemies. The rest were gone, victims of ambushes or overwhelmed by dirty fighters. As we continued to hunt for our teammate, I felt very exposed. I was worried we would be next.

“I hate to be ‘that’ guy,” Aaron announced as he effortlessly scanned the school grounds and spun his taser at the same time. “But Ruth-Ann is probably sleeping in a recovery room with Garett outside of this craziness.”

The minute I’d heard them say she was missing, I had jumped to that worse case conclusion too, but felt horrible for thinking so. Then Brayden had been so upset and determined about searching for her that I didn’t want to upset him further by having no hope or thinking the worst. Now that Brayden and the others were gone, though, I was starting to despair. She was gone and more of us would be gone before it was over.

“Ruth-Ann!” Jared shouted. “God, this is hopeless!”

When Kara plopped down on the battlefield and buried her head in her hands we all stared at her dumbfounded.

“What are you doing?” Jeremy exclaimed.

She looked up from her hands, tears welling up in her eyes.

“I’m so scared,” she whispered. “I don’t know if I can do this.”

Seeing my best friend’s fear made my heart hurt.

Jared stooped down in front of her, putting his arms on his sister’s shoulders.

“Come on Kara!” he urged, “Don’t panic now.”

Kara threw her taser on the ground several feet from her.

“How can I not panic, Jared?” she retorted angrily. “I’m not a fighter! The sheer fact that I’ve made it this far is because of you!” She bit her lip to fight the tears that were streaming down her cheeks. “I’m going to be a liability. You should just leave me.”

The boys scanned the battlefield frantically, looking for anyone from Concord High that could use Kara’s breakdown to their advantage. We had to keep moving regardless of whether we found Ruth-Ann or not. I offered Kara my hand.

“Let’s head inside. It’s been nearly an hour and more of your teammates will be in there to help you.” When she tried to protest that she was slowing people down, I continued, “We are a squad for a reason.” I tried to get her to smile. “We can let the boys do all the work—they love that kind of stuff—but it’s not safe where we are.”

“It’s not safe anywhere!” she wailed.

I turned to the boys, looking to see if they had any ideas when I saw green and brown in my peripheral vision.
